Nerja · Costa del Sol · Andalucía
Our ground-floor apartment sits in the quiet, gated Nerja Medina urbanisation on the western edge of Nerja — an old Andalusian fishing town on Spain's Costa del Sol. It sleeps four, has its own sunny terrace, and is available to rent all year round.
Nerja has been welcoming visitors for decades, and it still feels like the fishing village it once was. Here is what makes it — and our apartment — an easy place to spend a week or a month.
Nerja Medina sits between Playa El Playazo and Playa de la Torrecilla, on the western side of town. The beach is roughly 50 metres from the front gate — you can walk down in bare feet.
The centre, the famous Balcón de Europa, the shops, the bars and the restaurants are all a pleasant 15- to 20-minute stroll along the seafront.
The urbanisation was built in 2000 and is deliberately small: two storeys high, mostly houses, largely residential, with fountains, planted borders and gates on every entrance.
Nerja enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year. Even in January you can usually sit out on the terrace at midday in shirt sleeves.
There is a television with UK channels, plus books and a folder of local information about Nerja, so rainy days and quiet evenings are covered.
We let the apartment throughout the year. Winter visitors get mild, bright days; summer visitors get long, warm evenings and warm sea.
Nerja Medina is a ground-floor apartment in a small, quiet urbanisation in the town of Nerja. It was built in 2000 and is very close to the centre of town with all its amenities. Less than 50 metres from the beach, it appeals to young and old alike.
The urbanisation was built in 2000. It is small and exclusive — only two storeys high, so it never feels overcrowded. It is mainly houses with just a few apartments, and the community is largely residential.
The communal walkways have raised borders filled with exotic plants: bananas, cacti and flowering shrubs, with fountains and water features. There is a garden area with benches for simply sitting and relaxing, and gates on all the entrances, which keeps the whole site secure and private.
There are two large supermarkets within five minutes' walk.
Nerja is an old fishing village of about 15,000 people. It is popular with visitors and has plenty of bars and fine restaurants, but it does not cater for the here-we-go type — there are no nightclubs, sorry! What it does have is churches, several beaches, a great many pedestrian streets and the famous Balcón de Europa.
The "Balcony of Europe" is a palm-lined promontory right in the middle of town, built on the site of an old fortress. It has views along the coast in both directions and is where everybody ends up in the evening.
Playa de la Torrecilla is our nearest beach, a sheltered curve of dark sand with a promenade of chiringuitos. Playa de Burriana, ten minutes further east, is the biggest and busiest; El Playazo, next door to us, is the quiet one.
One of the most famous features of the area. Discovered in 1959, the caves were formed millions of years ago and make spectacular viewing. Underground concerts are held there throughout the year.
On Tuesday Nerja holds its street market, where you can buy fruit, vegetables, clothes, shoes and plenty of bargains. Sunday brings an antique and craft market, including locally produced ceramics.
The village of Maro lies a few kilometres east, above its own beach and the Cueva de Nerja. Between here and there, the nineteenth-century Eagle Aqueduct strides across the valley on tiered brick arches.
Six kilometres inland and a world away: a whitewashed Moorish village of stepped alleys, bougainvillea and ceramics, tumbling down a hillside below the Sierra Almijara.
The apartment is reached by motorway from Málaga Airport, about 45 minutes' drive away. The airport is served by all the major airlines of Europe and has plenty of car-hire desks, which makes the whole area easy to explore.
Nerja sits in the Axarquía, the eastern corner of Málaga province, sheltered by the Sierra Almijara. That gives it one of the mildest winters in mainland Spain and a summer that runs from May well into October.

About 50 metres. Nerja Medina sits between Playa El Playazo and Playa de la Torrecilla on the western side of Nerja, so you are on the sand within a minute or two of leaving the gate.
Four. There is a master bedroom with a double bed and a second bedroom with twin beds.
Yes — we let the apartment all year round. Winter is one of the nicest times to be in Nerja: bright, quiet and mild, with the town to yourself.

There is a wall clock in the lounge and nothing else — most guests bring their own. If yours is the kind you would not trust with the sea and the sand, ask us when you enquire: we have written our franker view on holiday watches in the guest notes, and the site we tend to point people towards for super clone watches is the one our regulars come back to.
There is no booking form and no agency in the middle — you deal with us directly. Tell us when you would like to come and we will confirm availability and explain how to secure your week.
